DeLAND, Fla. -- The two-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion North Florida sand volleyball team opens conference play on the road against Stetson on Tuesday with dual matches at 2 & 4 p.m.
The Ospreys (5-3, 0-0 ASun) had a week off from competition after posting a 2-2 record at the Ron Jon Beach N' Board Fest on Mar. 14-15. Stetson enters Tuesday's tilt with a perfect 10-0 record including a 4-0 mark in league play after sweeping Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast last weekend.
UNF owns a 6-1 all-time mark against the Hatters including a win in last season's Atlantic Sun championship match. Stetson earned its first win in the series earlier this season with a 3-2 decision in non-conference competition.
"Stetson has a strong sand program," said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. "We are looking forward to the challenge and excited about starting conference play. Our continued goal is to get better everyday and tomorrow is another opportunity for us to do that."
In the pairs first meeting this season, the Ospreys claimed wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions. UNF's top tandem of Dagnija Medina/Kim Hildreth outlasted the Stetson duo of Kaley Melville/Kaylee Anderson 2-1 (16-21, 21-19, 15-9). North Florida's pair of Cameron McGuire/Tanner Garbutt also earned a 2-1 win (21-18, 21-23, 15-10).
The Hatters earned 2-0 sweeps at both No. 2 and 3 before the match was decided in a tight 2-1 battle at No. 5. SU's pairing of Maren Rygh/Jordann Dierickx edged UNF's Julie Trembley/Emily Davanzo 16-21, 21-11, 15-11.
Following Tuesday's match, North Florida continues conference play Friday and Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast and Mercer in Ft. Myers, Fla.
