Record Tying Opening Round Pushes #WGolf to Top 5 at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Playing against the largest field in a regular season collegiate women's golf tournament, North Florida matched the program's record low round of 295 on Sunday ending the opening round of the Kiawah Island Classic in fifth place.
The Kiawah Island Classic features a field of 36 teams and is played on two courses at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The Ospreys played their first round of the competition on the longer Cougar Point Course (par - 72/ 6,001-yards). UNF's score matched the program best score carded this past fall in the opening round of the Courtyard Classic.
Freshman Nathalie Nygren was the squad's top performer finishing with a 1-under 71 to end the round in sixth place. Nygren became just the third golfer in UNF program history to record a round under-par and her score matched the program's all-time record low round.
Sophomore Kelly Aylwin and freshman Lauren Coe joined Nygren among the individual leaders finishing round one tied for 23rd after posting rounds of 2-over 74. Sophomores Emelie Alpe (76) and Belinda George (77) filled out the Osprey lineup at the event finishing tied for 49th and 62nd, respectively.
Troy leads the team competition after shooting an opening round 291, one stroke ahead of three teams including Kent State, Jacksonville State and St. John's. UNF was fifth with Chattanooga (297), High Point (300), Penn State (300), Delaware (301), Arkansas State (301) and Elon (301) rounded out the list of the Top 10 teams.
Tournament action at the Kiawah Island Classic continues with second round play on Monday. North Florida will be teammed with Florida Gulf Coast and Georgetown and begin play at 9:04 a.m. on Hole 1 of the Oak Point Course.
