Out of the Box
A-Sun Series Win Over Spartans: The Ospreys began their Atlantic Sun schedule by winning two out of three against USC Upstate this past weekend. The Spartans won game one, 3-2 holding the North Florida bats in check over the final eight innings. The Ospreys erupted for a season-high 19 hits in a 13-4 game two victory on Saturday and followed up with 15-hit performance in Sunday's, 4-3 extra inning win.
Sunday Heroics: Sophomore Corbin Olmstead did it all for the Ospreys in a 4-3 thrilling win over USC Upstate on Sunday. The right-hander pitched six innings of relief and then delivered the game-winning single, slapping a 3-2 pitch down the right field line for the series clinching victory.
Last time out: North Florida erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning against Bethune-Cookman last Wednesday night, aiding in a 12-7 victory. Garrick Ferguson and Corbin Olmstead each homered in the inning to power the Osprey offense. The Wildcats held the lead in the contest a total of four times but were unable to respond over the final two innings.
Scouting the Wildcats: Tuesday will mark the second of three games against Bethune-Cookman this season for the Ospreys. After Wednesday's loss to North Florida, Bethune-Cookman lost two out of three against North Carolina A&T this past weekend. The Wildcats won game one, 5-3 behind a strong pitching effort by Keith Zuniga but were outscored 17-9 in the final two games. A total of five Bethune-Cookman batters sport batting averages over the .300 mark, led by Matt Noble who is hitting .354 in 65 at bats.
Scouting the Tigers: Savannah State is coming off a 2-2 week with wins over North Carolina Central and Wofford. All three games against North Carolina Central were decided by one run this past weekend, with the Tigers emerging victorious in only the night cap of the Saturday doubleheader. Tre Sikes is the top bat for the Tigers, with a .338 batting average and 13 RBIs.
A Look into the Past: Wednesday will mark the sixth meeting between Savannah State and North Florida. The Ospreys currently hold a 4-1 edge in the all-time series. Prior to last season's 4-1 Tiger victory, the Ospreys had outscored the Tigers 77-14.
Statistically Speaking: Junior Drew Weeks has been red-hot over the first 18 games of the season. He is the only person in the Atlantic Sun batting over .400 with a crisp, .438 batting average. He leads the A-Sun in hits (32) and on-base percentage (.500). He has hit safely in all 18 games this year and is riding a 26-game hit streak that dates back to last season.
Chasing History: Weeks trails only former teammate Tyler Marincov for the longest hitting streak in the Division I era of UNF baseball. The school record is held by Kyle Caltrett who hit safely in 29 consecutive games in 2000.
The Key to Success: Hits. The Ospreys compiled 34 hits in the final two games against USC Upstate. When tallying 10 hits or more, the Ospreys are 7-2 as opposed to 2-7 when recording less than 10 hits
Leaving the Yard: The last four home runs hit by North Florida have come off the bats of four different players. Ryan Roberson ignited a three-run rally in the sixth inning in the series finale against USC Upstate. In the process he took over ninth place on the Division I career home run list with his 13th as an Osprey.
Gold Gloves: North Florida boasts a .978 fielding percentage through 18 games this season which is tops the Atlantic Sun. The Ospreys have committed a league-low 15 errors in 2014.
