WILMINGTON, N.C.—The University of North Florida women's tennis team clinched the doubles point en route to claiming a 4-3 victory Saturday over UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
"Doubles was much improved today," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We are starting to click at every position and are less reliant on our No. 2 and No. 3 spots to win the point. In singles, we didn't play our best on every court, but we battled and got the wins on the courts we needed to. Overall, I give a lot of credit to UNC Wilmington for fighting hard, they were a crafty team and this was a solid win for us."
In doubles, Rebeca Pereira and Quetzali Vazquez downed Olga Blank and Christine Kharkevich, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Simona Weymar and Esther Zuniga battled Angie Sekely and Alyssa for the 8-7 (7-5) win to clinch the doubles point.
North Florida collected singles victories at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 spots to earn the match winning points. Zuniga grabbed the first singles point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Blank at No. 2 singles. Taylor Hollander got a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hollie Champion at No. 6 singles. Michelle Valdez posted the match deciding win for the second-time this season by defeating Cameron 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
The Ospreys continue their current road trek with a two-match swing at Louisiana-Lafayette and TCU on March 10 and 11.
