PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Sophomore Austin Padova claimed his first collegiate title Tuesday while helping the North Florida men's golf team to a share of the team championship at the Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University at TPC Sawgrass PLAYERS Stadium course.
Padova finished with a 54-hole total of even par 216 including a final round 74 and finished tied with Texas A&M's Greg Yates. He carded career best marks for a single round (70), tournament total and top finish. As a team, UNF boasted a three-round tally of 886 to finish tied with No. 37-ranked Liberty. It marked the team's top finish of the 2013-14 season.
"This was a good way to start our spring season," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We got solid play from the team and gained valuable experience in a tight competition situation, which should be helpful to us down the road. I'm very excited for Austin to win his first tournament. It's a great way for a guy to start a semester. Hopefully, this will give him more confidence moving forward."
Joining Padova among the Top 10 individual finishers were junior teammates MJ Maguire and Joey Petronio. The duo tied for fifth-place with matching scores of 222 (+6). Maguire fired the squad's best round of the event (69) in round two and finished with a 76 on Tuesday while Petronio ended play with a 77.
Taylor Hancock collected his career best finish earning a tie for 16th with a score of 226 (+10) after a final round 77. It was the second career Top 20 showing for the redshirt sophomore. Osten Waite, a redshirt freshman for UNF, rounded out the lineup earning a tie for 70th (247).
UNF and Liberty dominated play at the event leading the field by 14 strokes. No. 9 Texas A&M finished third at 900 followed by No. 48 Tennessee (904), USC Upstate (915), Florida (918), East Carolina (919), Winthrop (924), Jacksonville (927), ETSU (927), FGCU (931), Cal Poly (932), Jacksonville State (934), Pepperdine (935), FAU (950) and Old Dominion (958).
North Florida will take a little over a week off from competition before returning to the links on Feb. 15-16 at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
