GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida men's golf team is tied for eighth following rounds of 293-295 in opening day play at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
The Ospreys own a 36-hole total of 588 and are tied with UCF and tournament host Florida heading into Sunday's final round. UNF is just five shots out of the top five teams.
Sophomore Taylor Hancock opened the day shooting a personal best 67 (-3) and sitting atop the medalist leaderboard. Hancock posted a 78 in his afternoon round and is currently tied for 15th at 145 to pace the Ospreys.
"Overall it was a bit of a rough day for us," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Taylor got things going in the first round but the rest of day was average play at best. Fortunately we still are in a position to have a solid finish if we can get things rolling in the final round. We will get rested up tonight and go out there refocused on Sunday."
Sophomore Austin Padova, who captured the medalist title in the Osprey's last event, carded rounds of 75-73 to end the day tied for 34th (148), while junior newcomer Parker Jones, a native of Gainesville, shot rounds of 76-73 for a 149 (T-40th).
A pair of juniors rounded out the Osprey lineup with Joey Petronio finishing the day tied for 46th at 150 (75-75) and MJ Maguire tying for 57th at 152 (78-74).
Arkansas holds a three stroke advantage in the team competition after an opening day tally of 570. Mercer is in second at 573 followed by Florida State (576), Vanderbilt (577), Georgia Southern (583), College of Charleston (586), UAB (587), North Florida/UCF/Florida (588), Liberty (591), Lamar (597), Coastal Carolina (598) and Jacksonville (609).
Play at the Gator Invitational concludes Sunday with a final round of 18 holes. North Florida begins final round competition at 9:20 a.m. on Hole 10 playing alongside UCF and UAB.
