Maguire Shines for #MGolf in Final Round of The Hayt

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- All-American golfer MJ Maguire posted his best tournament score and finish of the season in leading the North Florida men's golf team in the Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club.
Maguire, a junior for the Ospreys, carded a final round 3-under 69 to finish the 54-hole event with a final score of 211 (-5). The St. Petersburg, Fla., native finished in a third-place tie with Oklahoma State's Zachary Olsen.
As a team, UNF finished tied for seventh with No. 47-ranked Tennessee at 884. The Ospreys opened the event with a pair of solid rounds before struggling to a final round 301 on Tuesday.
"MJ really carried us today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We had set ourselves up for a solid finish but just played poorly. We have a couple weeks break before we return to action and it will be important for us to get rested and refocused. We will get back to work and continue trying to get better as a team."
Sophomores Taylor Hancock and Joe Stepnes both carded final rounds of 77 while fellow sophomore Austin Padova finished with a 78 and junior Joey Petronio shot an 83. Hancock finished tied for 33rd (222) followed by Padova tied for 37th (223), Stepnes tied for 58th (228) and Petronio in a tie for 81st (238).
In addition, a trio of Osprey linksters competed in the event as individuals led by senior Taylor Johnson, who finished as the top unattached golfer. Johnson finished in a tie for 15th at 217 including a final round 1-under 71. Redshirt freshman Osten Waite shot a 78 to finish tied for 33rd at 222 and junior Parker Jones tied for 46th (225) after a final round 79.
No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State led wire-to-wire in the event, winning the team championship by 10 shots with a three-round total of 845 (-19). The Cowboys total bettered the tournament's 54-hole record by four strokes, held previously at 849 by Florida (2001) and South Carolina (1998).
No. 6 UCF finished in second at 855 (-9) with No. 13 UAB earning third place at 859 (-5). North Texas was fourth at 870 followed by Troy (878), GRU Augusta (879), UNF and Tenneseee, Tulsa (885), Coastal Carolina (887), Louisville (889), No. 27 Liberty (890), Jacksonville (897), Furman (906) and UNC Wilmington (911).
Greg Eason of UCF captured the individual medalist crown with a tournament record score of 205 (-11). Eason bested the previous tournament record of 206 held by UNF Hall of Fame golfer David Bennett inn 2001.
In Tuesday's final round, a pair of golfers recorded aces with JU's Pre Samritpricha hitting a hole-in-one on No. 6 and Jared Bettchner posting his on No. 15.
North Florida will have two weeks off from competition before returning to the links on Mar. 14-16 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
