Hancock Paces #MGolf In Opening Round of Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – The North Florida men's golf team fired an opening round 291 at the Schenkel Invitational played Friday at Forest Heights Country Club.
The Ospreys' 3-over par total marked the squad's third lowest round of the season and placed the team seventh in the 15-team field. Sophomore Taylor Hancock led the way for UNF carding a season low 4-under 68 to share the lead in individual medalist play.
For Hancock, it marked the third consecutive tournament that he has opened play with an under-par performance. The 68 was his lowest career score in relation to par and his second lowest overall total.
Junior All-American MJ Maguire joined Hancock in the top 10 listing after shooting a 2-under 70 (T-8th) in day one play.
Sophomore Austin Padova shot a 2-over 74 to place in a tie for 29th while junior Joey Petronio finished tied for 78th at 79 and senior Taylor Johnson sits in a tie for 84th at 80 to round out the Osprey lineup. Playing as individuals, redshirt freshman Osten Waite and sophomore Joe Stepnes both carded even par rounds of 72 to end the day tied for 17th.
UAB posted an opening round 3-under 285 to grab the lead in the team competition. Tournament host Georgia Southern is in second at 286 followed by Virginia (290), Texas (290), College of Charleston (290), Ole Miss (290), UNF, North Carolina State (292), Kentucky (294), UCF (294), Florida (297), Duke (297), Maryland (299), Georgia State (301) and North Texas (309).
Hancock and Kentucky's David Snyder share the medalist lead by one stroke over a group of five players.
North Florida continues play the Schenkel on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. on Hole No. 1 along side North Carolina State and UCF.
