JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida basketball opens a key Atlantic Sun Conference home stand Thursday against USC Upstate at 7:30 p.m. in UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (14-13, 8-6 ASun) enter Thursday's tilt a half game behind the Spartans (16-12, 9-6) in the conference standings with just two weeks left in the regular season. UNF and USC Upstate are both in the hunt for one of four quarterfinal hosting spots in the upcoming conference tournament.
UNF is coming off a hard fought victory over crosstown rival Jacksonville in their last outing. The win gave the Ospreys a sweep over JU while also allowing the team to match its conference win total from a year ago and eclipse the squad's overall victory total last season.
Against the Dolphins, sophomore Beau Beech broke out of a recent slump by hitting five three-pointers on his way to a team best 21 points in the victory. Freshman Dallas Moore continues to lead UNF in scoring for the season at 12.3 points per game, while senior Travis Wallace ranks second in scoring (11.4 ppg) and is the squad's top rebounder with 7.3 boards a contest.
Reigning A-Sun Player of the Year, Torrey Craig leads the Spartans in scoring at 17.1 points per game. The Spartans have won three of their last four and seven of nine heading into Thursday's clash with the Ospreys. USC Upstate is also carrying a two-game road win streak into the game.
Thursday's game marks the 21st all-time meeting between UNF and USC Upstate with the Spartans owning a 12-8 advantage in the series. Upstate has claimed four of the last five matchups. The Ospreys posted a 77-53 win in the pair's last meeting in UNF Arena.
