Â
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball plays its first mid-week game on Wednesday when the Ospreys make the trek west to Florida A&M for a single contest.
Â
"We had a great weekend at home, but we have several huge games on the road this week," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "Florida A&M had a tough tournament at UCF this past weekend, but they competed in each of their games. We have to be consistent with our batting, pitching and fielding and play our game."
Â
The Ospreys are off to an 8-2 start and have gone 4-1 at each of their first two tournaments of the season. UNF was supposed to play a mid-week game last Wednesday against UCF, but it was postposed to Apr. 2 due to expected inclement weather in Jacksonville.
Â
In each of the last three UNF wins, an Osprey has registered a home run. Rachel Engel began the trend with a two-out solo homer against Savannah State. Both Aisha Kerr and Kelly Wilson added two-run shots against Troy and Southern Illinois, respectively. For Kerr, it was the second-straight weekend in which she's registered a home run. Kerr currently leads UNF with a .385 batting average, 10 hits and seven runs.
Â
Florida A&M plays its first home game on Wednesday. The Lady Rattlers opened the season at the Mercer Bear Classic and were in action last weekend at the UCF Marriott Invitational. Florida A&M comes off a 1-4 showing at last weekend's tournament. However, after their 6-2 win over Illinois-Chicago, the Lady Rattlers dropped one-run games to both Middle Tennessee (6-5) and UCF (1-0) on Feb. 15 and then suffered a 3-1 loss to Middle Tennessee on Feb. 16. Alyssa Weaver enters Wednesday with a team-best nine hits, while three Lady Rattlers are batting .333.
Â
UNF leads the all-time series 15-8, but Florida A&M won the last meeting 7-5 on Mar. 7, 2013 at the UNF Softball Complex. Wednesday's game is just the second time in the series history in which UNF and Florida A&M meet in a single game not associated with a tournament. The previous time was last season's game on Mar. 7.
Â
First pitch for Wednesday's game is set for 5 p.m., from the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.Â
