JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida men's soccer team will play its final home game of the season on Saturday night against Atlantic Sun Conference foe, Northern Kentucky. Prior to the game the Ospreys will honor its three seniors, Christopher Bush, Teddy Mulamba and Diogo Quirino.
The three seniors will play for the final time at Hodges Stadium in what will prove to be a crucial Atlantic Sun contest for both teams Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Although the Ospreys have already clinched a berth into the Atlantic Sun playoffs, a win can help jockey for a higher seed in the tournament. Northern Kentucky, who is seeking its first ever A-Sun playoff appearance needs a win or a Jacksonville loss to qualify for postseason play.
Â
What's at Stake: For the Ospreys, who clinched last Saturday without playing a game, all that can be determined is what seed they will be in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships next week. Sitting at seven points and based on the teams currently ahead of them, the best the Ospreys can do is a three-seed and a loss can get them as low as a six seed. The tournament is hosted at one site and the Ospreys will not be playing for a first round bye. For Northern Kentucky, its simple, win and you're in. A win would clinch the school's first ever postseason berth as well as a Jacksonville loss.
Salute to the Seniors: The trio of Christopher Bush, Teddy Mulamba and Diogo Quirino will all be playing their last game at Hodges Stadium on Saturday night. The three were part of the recent resurgence of North Florida men's soccer which included last year's improbable run to the conference championship game. The three have combined to play 94 games in the past three seasons and have been integral parts in the team's leadership on and off the field.
Â
Morrell Chasing History: Junior Alex Morrell is just one assist shy of breaking the school's D-1 mark of 10 career assists. He is currently tied for the most assists with Shareef Rajkumar and is alone in third with 22 career points. His last point came against USC Upstate when he recorded a pair of assists in a 3-0 victory.
Scouting Northern Kentucky: Winners of three of the last four games, Northern Kentucky needs a win or a Jacksonville loss to qualify for the 2014 Atlantic Sun Championship. The Norse took down first place Stetson last Saturday, 1-0 in Highland Heights on Senior Day for their first conference victory of the year. Senior Cian McDonald leads the team with 13 points (five goals, two assists) and also leads the conference with 51 shots. Goalkeeper Toby Frohlich has started the last five games and has recorded three shutouts in that time period.
