JACKSONVILLE – The North Florida basketball team welcomes Florida Gulf Coast Thursday at 7 p.m. to UNF Arena looking to extend its current six-game home win streak. Pepsi is serving as the official game sponsor for the UNF-FGCU contest.
The Ospreys (9-8, 3-1 ASun) swoop home after earning a split in their opening road weekend of conference play. UNF outlasted Lipscomb, 78-73, before coming up just short in a 70-64 loss at Northern Kentucky on Monday night.
FGCU is 9-7 overall and have opened Atlantic Sun Conference play with three consecutive victories to sit atop the league standings. The Eagles topped Stetson, 68-55, on Sunday afternoon. Bernard Thompson averages 14.4 points per game to lead a trio of FGCU players in double figures.
UNF senior Travis Wallace, the reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, leads the Ospreys averaging 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest. Finishing with 15 points at NKU, Wallace became just the ninth UNF player to reach 1,000 career points. Freshman Dallas Moore ranks second on the team in scoring with 12.1 points a game, while fellow freshman Chris Davenport is second in rebounding at 5.6 rpg.
The Ospreys current home win streak is just one victory shy of the program's all-time record accomplished three times including twice in the past two seasons. UNF is also just one win shy of collecting double-digit victories for a fifth consecutive season.
Thursday's game marks the 17th all-time meeting between UNF and FGCU with the Eagles holding a slight 9-7 edge after claiming three games over the Ospreys last season. Florida Gulf Coast won the first six meetings in the series before UNF rattled off seven consecutive victories prior to last year's outcomes.
