FORT MYERS, Fla. – Another tough opponent awaits University of North Florida women's basketball as the Ospreys face Atlantic Sun leader Florida Gulf Coast Saturday night at Alico Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m., and the game will air live on ESPN3.
Â
"Tomorrow is a big challenge for us, but I think our team is up for it," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Florida Gulf Coast has proven to be a force to reckon with since joining the Atlantic Sun, but we look forward to facing them on their home floor."
Â
The Ospreys had their first 40-point first half of the season in their most recent outing. UNF put up 41 points at Stetson on Thursday, but were unable to hold off a late Hatter surge and fell 75-67. The eight-point difference is the fewest points Stetson, who is the Atlantic Sun's top scoring team, has won a conference game this season.
Â
Destinee Smith posted her second-consecutive 20-point game on Thursday night. After tallying a career-high 23 points against Lipscomb last Saturday, Smith put up 21 at Stetson. Smith's recorded 20-or-more points in five games throughout her Osprey career with the first 20-point game of her career coming against Florida Gulf Coast on Feb. 2, 2012 at UNF Arena.
Â
Florida Gulf Coast is the Atlantic Sun's only remaining undefeated team in league play after knocking off Jacksonville on Thursday night to improve to 6-0 in the conference for the season. The Eagles own a 42-game winning streak during regular-season conference games. Florida Gulf Coast has not lost a regular season conference game since falling 75-74 at USC Upstate on Feb. 28, 2011. However, the last loss to an Atlantic Sun team came in last year's conference championship game when Stetson downed the Eagles 70-64.
Â
Sarah Hansen averages a team-best 13.7 points per game, while Whitney Knight (13.2 ppg) and Stephanie Haas (12.6 ppg) are also averaging points in the double-digits. Hansen also has a team-best 6.7 rebounds per game. Knight has made 45 blocks this season.
Â
Florida Gulf Coast leads the all-time series 11-2 and won the most recent meeting 73-44 in the Atlantic Sun semifinals at Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga.
