ROCKY FACE, Ga. -- The North Florida men's golf team opened up their 2013 fall season Friday carding a first round 295 (+7) in the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.
The Ospreys, who finished ninth at last year's Carpet Capital, currently sit in fifth-place of the 14-team field. Sophomore Austin Padova led UNF on day one, shooting a one-over 73 to rank tied for 17th.
Padova is joined in the Top 25 individuals by a trio of North Florida juniors including MJ Maguire, Joey Petronio and Parker Jones. All three golfers finished the day tied for 23rd after posting rounds of 74 (+2). Redshirt freshman Osten Waite carded a 77 (+5) in his collegiate debut and ended the day tied for 49th.
"We played a solid round to start the season," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We could have even finished better had we played the final holes stronger. We need to stay patient and keep playing smart."
Tournament host Georgia Tech was the only team under par on day one finishing with an eight-under 280 to grab the lead in the team competition. North Carolina is in second place, 10 shots behind after a round of 290 (+2). Georgia is third at 291 followed by Clemson (294), UNF, LSU (297), Kennesaw State (297), MTSU (298), Texas (298), Auburn (299), Wake Forest (301), South Carolina (302), Tennessee (306) and Chattanooga (306).
Tournament action continues through the weekend with 18 holes of play scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The Ospreys begin second round action at 9:50 a.m. Saturday off the first tee and will be paired with Clemson and LSU.
