Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team battled for 110 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw with Columbia to conclude the North Florida Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Patton Park.
Â
"We battled against a very competitive Columbia team," said head coach Linda Hamilton. "It was great to play in front of our home crowd for the first time this season."
Â
In the 33rd minute, Columbia made a substitution for Phoenetia Browne. Within a minute of play Browne was able to give the Lions the lead as she dribbled past a couple of defenders.
Â
Despite being outshot 9-4 in the first half, the Ospreys came out of the half aggressively on the attack. Early into the period, senior forward Carolina Lencina placed a long cross to find freshman Alexis Bredeau for the score, tying the match at 1-1. The Lions were able to answer with a goal of their own in the 66th minute by Elly McGuffog. After multiple attempts at the goal, senior Keara Murphy was able to find the back of the net for the equalizer.
Â
The Ospreys finished the match outshooting the Lions 23-16. Heather Botelho, Bredeau and Lencina led North Florida in shots with four a piece.
Â
Junior keeper Megan Dorsey made some spectacular saves for the Ospreys, finishing with six. Grace Redmon tallied nine saves for the Lions.
Â
"We were able to score some goals this weekend which certainly is a confidence builder," said Hamilton. "Each game we're looking to improve as we play and I think we've continued to do that."
Â
The Ospreys look to remain unbeaten at home when they welcome Furman to Patton Park on Friday, Sept. 20, for a 7 p.m. match.
