Women’s Soccer Continues Road Trip at Navy and George Mason

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team continues its six-match road trip with a visit to Navy and George Mason. The Ospreys will take on Navy on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:00 p.m. before finishing the weekend at George Mason on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m. Â

Last weekend, the Ospreys (1-0-1) began the 2013 season on the road with a 1-1 draw at Gardner-Webb on Friday evening and closed out the opening weekend with a 1-0 victory over College of Charleston on Sunday.

North Florida was able to get on the scoreboard first against the Bulldogs as an own goal put UNF in front 1-0. The Ospreys controlled most of the match, outshooting the Bulldogs 17-8. Gardner-Webb was able to come out of halftime to tie the match in the 49th minute on a goal from Shelby Hooe. Both teams had opportunities in the match, but neither team was able to break the plane and after 110-minutes of action, the contest finished in a draw.

The second match of the season saw the Ospreys claim its first victory of the season. In a defensive battle, sophomore defender Lanie Keating was able to score the match-winning goal on a free kick from 42 yards out to give North Florida the 1-0 victory over College of Charleston. Freshman goalkeeper Susie Ford tallied five saves to earn her first collegiate shutout.

Last season, Navy (Friday, Aug. 30, 7:00 p.m.) posted a 19-2-1 record finishing first in the Patriot League. Navy comes into the weekend with a 1-1 record. In their opening week, the Midshipmen suffered a 3-2 loss to NC State and a 5-0 decision over The Citadel. In the last meeting between the two teams, the Midshipmen claimed a 5-3 victory over the Ospreys at Hodges Stadium. Keara Murphy and Carolina Lencina both scored in that match. Navy returns leading goal scorer Ashlynn Soellner, who tallied 10 goals and nine assists last season, to the field in 2013.

George Mason (Sunday, Sept. 1, 1:00 p.m.) began the 2013 season with a 1-1 draw with William & Mary. The Patriots are coming off of a 7-11-1 season in 2012, including a 3-6-1 in conference play. GMU returns 20 letterwinners, including nine starters from the last season. In addition, the Patriots added 11 newcomers to this year's roster.
