DELAND, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon in an elimination game at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. The Ospreys finish the regular season 40-19 – the most wins in the program's Division I history.
The Ospreys missed several opportunities throughout the game. UNF left a season-high 14 runners on base, including nine in scoring position.
Senior
Michael Renner took the hard-luck loss in a complete-game effort. The All-Atlantic Sun Conference performer scattered nine hits in his career-best 9.0 innings of work. Renner surrendered four runs, but just two earned runs on the day. He issued two walks, while striking out five. The southpaw notched a pair of 1-2-3 innings on the day and caused the Owls to strand nine runners on base, including six in scoring position.
Offensively, North Florida registered eight hits, but was unable to record an extra-base hit on the day.
Garrick Ferguson and
Drew Weeks each collected a pair of hits apiece, while
Kyle Brooks,
Tyler Marincov,
Donnie Dewees and
Ryan Roberson each added base knocks on the day. Brooks and Weeks each scored runs in the game, while Marincov and Ferguson each had a RBI apiece. In addition, the Ospreys drew seven walks as a team led by
Nick Karmeris' two base on balls.
North Florida was the first team to score, scratching a run across in the bottom of the first inning. Brooks reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop. He advanced to second on a groundout. Marincov singled through the right side of the infield to plate Brooks and give North Florida a 1-0 advantage early.
Dewees continued the inning with a single to left center field, but a double play ended the inning without any further runs.
Kennesaw State responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. With two outs, back-to-back singles placed runners on first and second and a walk loaded the bases. KSU's Max Pentecost gave the designated visitors the lead with a two-RBI double to right field. The Ospreys were able to induce a pop up to second base to end the inning and the threat.
North Florida missed some opportunities in the third and fourth innings. In both innings, the Ospreys loaded the bases with less than two outs, but were unable to record a timely hit, leaving the bases loaded in consecutive innings.
The Ospreys tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Weeks singled up the middle. N. Karmeris followed with a walk.
Garrick Ferguson singled hard off a diving first baseman's glove. Weeks came around to score on the play, while N. Karmeris and Ferguson both advanced into scoring position on the throw. The Owls prevented any further runs with an inning-ending strikeout.
The Owls regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. The leadoff batter singled to left center field and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A fielding error by the Ospreys left KSU with runners on the corners and one out. Kennesaw State used a squeeze bunt to score the go-ahead run from third base. With a runner on second and two outs, Renner ended the inning with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Brooks walked to start off the inning. He moved to second base on a
Paul Karmeris sacrifice bunt. Brooks advanced to third base on a groundout, placing the potential tying run 90 feet from home. The Ospreys were unable to tie the game as a groundout ended the inning.
KSU added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Pentecost singled back to the pitcher and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A throwing error by UNF left the visitors with runners on the corners. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice, which scored the runner from third, making the score 4-2.
The Ospreys were unable to tie the score in the final two innings and were eliminated from the Atlantic Sun Championships in the semifinals. North Florida advanced to the semifinals of the A-Sun Championships for the first time in school history, earning the No. 3 seed – the highest seed in the Ospreys' Division I tournament history. UNF concluded the tournament 2-2 defeating Lipscomb and Kennesaw State in its first two games of the tournament.
