
Ospreys Begin Play at NCAA Golf Regional on Thursday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 18 North Florida men's golf team begins play in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Thursday morning at Golden Eagle Country Club.
The Ospreys, who are the No. 4 seed in the 13-team field, are making their fourth consecutive appearance in NCAA Regional play after winning a second straight Atlantic Sun Conference title on Apr. 22-24. UNF has participated in nine NCAA regionals since moving to the Division I level.
“We are looking forward to getting off to a quick start,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder, who was named the 2013 A-Sun Coach of the Year. “This course is challenging and will require the guys to be patient, but is also a course that is open to putting up good scores. It is always exciting to play in the NCAA tournament and we are ready to get things going towards our next goal.”
North Florida's lineup features a trio of golfers ranked among the nation's Top 40. Senior Sean Dale, the 2013 A-Sun Golfer of the Year, is ranked 9th and tops the squad with a 71.06 stroke average. Joining Dale in pacing the Ospreys is fellow senior Kevin Phelan, who ranks 37th nationally and earned his fourth All-Atlantic Sun honor this season. Phelan owns a 72.50 average and finished the season with nine rounds under par.
As a duo, Dale and Phelan are both playing in their third NCAA Regionals of their careers. The pair of been key forces in UNF's recent success as the Ospreys have posted Top Five team finishes in 22 of 28 events in which Dale and Phelan have been in the lineup.
In addition to the senior tandem, sophomore MJ Maguire had a standout season ending the regular season ranked 25th nationally and claiming the Atlantic Sun Championship medalist honor. Maguire, who boasts a stroke average of 71.62, garnered first-team All-A-Sun accolades and also led the team with 11 rounds under par this season.
The remainder of the UNF lineup for the NCAA Tallahassee Regional includes sophomore Joey Petronio and redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock. North Florida's squad features four of the five players that posted a third place finish at last season's Athens Regional.
The Ospreys begin play Thursday at 8:25 a.m. off of tee No. 10 and will be paired with Oklahoma and Wake Forest in the opening round. The top five team finishers at six regional sites advance to the NCAA Championship beginning May 28 in Atlanta. The regional format is 54-holes over three days of play.
The Ospreys hope to advance to the championship round for the fourth time in program history and the third time in the past four years.
