DeLAND, Fla. – University of North Florida softball plays its final road game of the regular season at Stetson on Wednesday at Patricia Wilson Field. The game is the series finale between the Ospreys and the Hatters. The series with a doubleheader split in DeLand on Apr. 17 with UNF taking Game One 8-0 in five innings and Stetson posting a 6-2 win in Game Two.
The Ospreys come off a three-game series streak at cross-town rival Jacksonville last weekend. The sweep gave UNF 39 wins, tying the most season wins in the program's Division I years. UNF has not posted a 40-win season since its Division II years and last eclipsed that mark in 2044 when the Ospreys claimed 46 victories.
During the series with the Dolphins, Jackie Reese set a new single-game record for hit by a pitch. Reese was hit three times during Game Two, breaking the previous mark of two. To go along with the three times that Reese was hit, Marissa Thomas was hit twice, bringing UNF's total hit by a pitch to five and tying the team's single-game mark. Meanwhile, Mariah Reynolds became the first Osprey since 2008 to registered double-digit home runs on the year. Reynolds, who homered in both games at Stetson two weeks ago, is just three home runs shy of tying UNF's single-season mark.
Pitching has been a key factor towards UNF's success in 2013. UNF is the only team in the Atlantic Sun to register under a 2.00 ERA for the season. The Ospreys' pitching staff of Kayla Goff, Cortney Radke and Kaylie Wallace have combined for a conference-leading 1.92 ERA, which is also ranked 22nd nationally in the latest NCAA statistics. Meanwhile, individually, Wallace has the conference's best overall ERA with a 1.53 and is one of two pitchers with 21 wins on the season. Stetson's Meredith Owen also has 21 victories in the circle.
Stetson has hit a hot streak since being swept by USC Upstate nearly a month ago. The Hatters have gone 10-3 and won three conference series (Jacksonville, Kennesaw State and ETSU) in order to lock the No. 6 seed for next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament. Weather forced last weekend's series at Lipscomb to be condensed into just a doubleheader on Sunday. Stetson split the series, falling 7-3 in Game One and rebounding for a 4-3 win in Game Two. In the doubleheader two weeks ago, Stetson hit .205 against UNF and Owen, in Game Two, registered a 1.00 ERA. Owen enters Wednesday with a 1.85 ERA and also leads the team with a .313 batting average.
UNF leads the all-time series 16-12.
First pitch for Wednesday's game is set for 5 p.m.
