Softball Sweeps Series From Mercer with 5-4 Win on Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball fended off a late-seventh inning rally by Mercer in order to hang on to a 5-4 win on Sunday at the UNF Softball Complex and sweep the Bears in a key three-game Atlantic Sun series.
The Ospreys jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jackie Reese's RBI single through the left side brought home Danica Mandarano, while Kelly Wilson got home on a Marissa Thomas sacrifice pop fly.
UNF added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Mandarano drilled a stand-up, three-run double to center field and UNF took a 5-0 lead.
Mercer got onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run from Krista Kennedy that made it a three-run game.
The Bears attempted to rally in the seventh. With one out and runners on the corners, McKenzie Woody scored on a Kennedy single to center field. Kaytlin Haney's run as Ashton Holt grounded out made it a one-run, 5-4 game in favor of UNF. However, Randi Rae lined out to Ashley Holton at short stop for the game's final out.
Cortney Radke earned the win after going 6.0 innings and allowing four runs off eight hits. Radke also fired eight strikeouts.
Kaylie Wallace picked up her first save of the season, coming in for the final 1.0 inning. Wallace gave up one hit, but also struck out one batter.
After pitching the first 1.0 inning for the Bears, Julia Rice was credited with the loss. Rice allowed two runs off two hits and fanned one batter.
Wilson led the Ospreys from the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run.
Four different players each had two hits for Mercer with Kennedy going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
UNF returns to the road for a mid-week doubleheader at Stetson on Wednesday at Patricia Wilson Field.
