NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team captured its first-ever outright Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship on Saturday, as it grabbed a 5-2 win at Lipscomb to finish up its regular season.
The Ospreys struck first, battling to take a hard-fought doubles point. Sophomore Timo Kranz and senior Julien Belair started things off by rolling to an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles that raised their record as a duo to 5-0 on the year. Senior Moritz Buerchner and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek, playing in their first A-Sun match together, then battled to a marathon 9-8 win at No. 1 to give UNF a 1-0 lead.
Senior Daniel Sotomarino started singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 for the Ospreys, just the second match the senior has played in the top spot this season. Freshman Bernardo Craveiro earned a comeback win, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, at No. 6 to improve his career dual match record to 6-1.
Belair kept his unprecedented hot streak going as he cruised to his 13th consecutive singles victory, a UNF record, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2, while Kranz earned his fifth A-Sun singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5.
"This was a really good win for us," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "We had to fight for it and I'm proud of the way everyone stepped up. We got a great pair of matches from Timo in singles and doubles."
With the win, the Opsreys move to 14-7 on the year and capture their first-ever outright Atlantic Sun title with a flawless 8-0 record in conference play. In 2011, UNF split the regular season crown with East Tennessee State.
"Winning the regular season championship is just another instance of our senior class re-writing the record books here at UNF," Schaechterle said, "Along with their leadership, we've had contributions from the whole team this year. Everyone on the roster has stepped up in important matches more than once. This was a total team effort."
As the top seed in next week's six-team Atlantic Sun Tournament, the Ospreys will recieve a bye into Saturday's semifinals, where they will play the winner of Friday's quarterfinal matchup of the No. 4 and 5 seeds.
