COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The North Florida sand volleyball team defeated ULM before dropping a close match against Webber International on Saturday in opening day play of the Beach'N Boards Fest.
The Ospreys (1-1) got things started in their debut event of 2013 with a strong 4-1 victory over the Warhawks (1-1). A trio of UNF pairs claimed straight set wins including No. 3 Cameron McGuire/Paige Pridgeon (21-17, 21-15), No.4 Julie Trembley/Britt Claessens (21-19, 21-16) and No. 5 Nicole Baran/Anna Wagner (21-9, 21-16).
North Florida's No. 2 tandem of Carolyn Jenkins/Cari Whitmire earned a hard fought three-set decision (17-21, 21-18, 16-14) while UTM earned their lone victory at No. 1 singles when Tetiana Sukach/Zuzana Markova edged the Osprey pairing of Dagnija Medina/Anna Budinska, 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 17-15).
In the second match of the day, Webber outlasted the Ospreys 3-2. UNF got straight set wins at No. 3 (McGuire/Pridgeon) and No. 5 (Trembley/Claessens) but dropped close contests at No. 1 (Medina/Budinska), No. 2 (Jenkins/Whitmire) and No. 4 (Wagner/Emily Strack).
“It was a good start to the season,” said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. “It was some tough conditions with the wind but gave us a look at where we are and what we need to work on. We can definitely build on today's play. The match versus Webber was extremely competitive and a couple of the sets could have gone either way.”
The Ospreys will conclude play at the Beach'N Boards Fest with a pair of matches on Sunday against Georgia State (8:30 a.m.) and Stetson (1 p.m.).
