MACON, Ga. -- The North Florida Sand Volleyball team opens Atlantic Sun Conference play with a pair of dual matches against Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast beginning Friday at the Mercer Sand Courts.
The Ospreys (4-1, 0-0 ASun) are slated to face the Bears (0-7, 0-0 ASun) at 10 a.m. followed by a match against the Eagles (1-3, 1-3 ASun) at 1 p.m. UNF will then play both teams again on Saturday, meeting FGCU at 10 a.m. and Mercer at 4 p.m.
UNF, the defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions, has enjoyed success in the early part of the season including a sweep of the team and flighted pairs competitions in its home tournament on Mar. 16-17.
North Florida owns a perfect 10-0 record from its pairings at the No.4 and No. 5 spots. Junior Britt Claessens and sophomore Julie Trembley are undefeated as a pair and have yet to surrender a set in competition. Seniors Emily Strack and Anna Wagner have also been a formidable duo suffering just one defeat. Another solid tandem for the Ospreys has been senior Paige Pridgeon and sophomore Cameron McGuire with a 5-2 mark including a loss to Strack/Wagner at the UNF Sand Invitational.
Senior Dagnija Medina and junior Anna Budinska, the ASun Pair of the Year last season, started slow but have won two of their last three matches and captured the top flight championship at the UNF Invite. UNF's No. 2 pairing of senior Carolyn Jenkins and sophomore Cari Whitmire has also claimed victory in two of their last three outings.
Following this weekend's doubleheader, North Florida continues conference play at Stetson on Apr. 3.
