Ospreys Outlast Bisons, Claim Series

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Florida baseball team won a tight 7-5 game over Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn. The two teams traded runs early, before the Ospreys pulled ahead in the fifth inning and hung on for the two-run victory. The win clinches the series for the Ospreys; marking the first time in the Smoke Laval Era that North Florida won the first Atlantic Sun Conference series of the year.
North Florida out-hit Lipscomb, 12-to-10 in the game, including four extra base hits. Kyle Brooks, Paul Karmeris, Corbin Olmstead and Joe Wielbruda each had a pair of base hits in the game. Donnie Dewees made his only hit of the game count with a home run to right field. Brooks, Wielbruda and Corey Bass each had a double apiece in the game. Brooks led the team with two runs scored, while Dewees led the team with a pair of RBI.
On the mound, Olmstead picked up his first collegiate victory in 5.0 innings of relief. The true freshman scattered six hits, allowing a pair of runs. He struck out a career-high five strikeouts without issuing a walk. Olmstead entered the game in relief of starter Kyle Westwood. Westwood tossed the first 4.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. The senior hurler also recorded three strikeouts in his outing.
Lipscomb was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. After retiring the first two runners of the inning, the Ospreys surrendered back-to-back walks to give the home team a pair of base runners. The next batter hit a two-RBI double to left center field to take a 2-0 lead after two complete.
North Florida responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Brooks led off the inning by reaching base on a Lipscomb error. Bass followed with a walk. Wielbruda successfully executed a sacrifice bunt to move the duo into scoring position. The first run came home on an RBI groundout by Drew Weeks. Tyler Marincov tied the score with a two-out single to left field, knotting the game at 2-2.
The Bisons pulled to within one on one swing. LU's Griffin Moore hit a solo home run to right field to trim the Ospreys lead to 4-3. UNF was able to get out of the inning without allowing any other runs as Westwood ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Ospreys increased their lead to three runs with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Marincov led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Dewees hit his third home run of the season to put North Florida ahead 6-3.
Lipscomb pulled to within one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, the Bisons used a single to center field and a double down the left field line to score a run. A second double in the inning left the home team with runners on second and third with one out. Lipscomb used an RBI groundout to score a run and cut the UNF lead to 6-5.
The Ospreys added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Ryan Roberson singled to left field with one out to start things for North Florida. Garrick Ferguson entered the game to run for Roberson at first base. With two outs, P. Karmeris walked to move Ferguson into scoring position. After a pitching change, Olmstead helped his own cause with a RBI single through the left side, pushing the Osprey lead to 7-5.
In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Olmstead struck out the first batter he faced for the first out of the inning. After surrendering an infield single to first base, Olmstead induced a double play to end the game and preserve the victory.
North Florida and Lipscomb conclude the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with a single game on Sunday afternoon.
