MACON, Ga. – University of North Florida women's basketball starts a key three-game road swing on Saturday when the Ospreys visit Mercer for a 2 p.m., game at Hawkins Arena.
“This is another tough and critical weekend,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Mercer is playing really well and has very talented players. They have the ability to make offensive plays at all five spots on the floor and make key defensive stops. We will have to be on top of our game.”
UNF's game on Saturday is the third in a row against the Atlantic Sun's top three teams. The Ospreys split last weekend with Stetson – who was second in the A-Sun standings – and conference leader Florida Gulf Coast.
Playing away from UNF Arena has been a challenge for UNF this season, who is 2-9 in games not at its home court this season and 1-9 in those that are designated as away games. However, the Ospreys got their first away win during their last road trip, taking a 62-56 win at ETSU on Jan. 26.
Raneisha Lamar came out strong in the Ospreys' last two games, tallying double-doubles against both Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. Lamar's double-double against the Eagles was her sixth of the season and tied the most single-season double-doubles in UNF's Division I history. She also ranks among the A-Sun's top players in field goal percentage in conference-only games, coming in at second and shooting 53.8 percent (42-for-78).
Meanwhile, Ki Conner brings a streak of four games with double-digit points into Saturday's contest. Conner is averaging 16.3 ppg in the last four games, which included a career-high 23 points at ETSU two weeks ago.
Since being swept by Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson to start its conference slate, Mercer has rolled off eight-straight wins. The Bears have averaged 69.8 ppg during those eight games and scored over 70 points in six of those victories. The Bears have not converted on many three-pointers during the season and did not make a single long-ball against the Ospreys in this year's first game. Approximately 90 percent of Mercer's field goals (448-of-498) are of the two-point variety (either jumper or layup).
Mercer has the A-Sun's leading scorer in Precious Bridges, who is averaging 17.9 ppg on the season and 18.8 against conference opponents. Meanwhile, Sharnea Boykins dishes out a conference-leading 7.1 apg and has a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio, while Teanna Robinson is making 1.7 bpg.
UNF leads the all-time series 10-6, but Mercer won this season's first meeting. That loss for the Ospreys snapped a five-game winning streak against the Bears.
