GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 35-ranked University of North Florida men's golf team opens their spring tournament schedule this weekend at the SunTrust Gator Invitational beginning Saturday.
The Ospreys return to action after taking almost four months off from competition for the winter break. UNF played in four events during the fall earning their best finish (3rd) at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship.
Senior Sean Dale, who recently captured the medalist title at the prestigious Jones Cup, heads the North Florida lineup for the Gator Invitational. Dale is joined by fellow senior Kevin Phelan, sophomores MJ Maguire and Joey Petronio along with freshman Joe Stepnes. Redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock is competing as an individual in the event.
“We are looking forward to getting back into competition,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “It has been a long break for events so it will be fun to see where we stack up against some of the best teams in the Southeast. We haven't had much success in Gainesville so it will be important to get some good practice in during the practice round to be as prepared as possible.”
The Gator Invitational will be played on the par 70, 6,701 yard layout of the Mark Bostick Golf Course. The event features a 14-team field headlined by seven teams ranked in the latest Top 50 by Golfweek. Competition includes 36 holes of play on Saturday followed by a final round of 18 holes on Sunday.
The tournament field includes host No. 5 Florida, No. 13 Arkansas, No. 23 Liberty, No. 31 Florida State, No. 42 Mississippi State, No. 49 UCF, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lamar, Memphis, South Alabama and UAB.
Live scoring during each round will be available online at www.golfstat.com.
