JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a strong comeback win against Stetson on Saturday, University of North Florida women's basketball faces its second-straight tough opponent when the Ospreys host Atlantic Sun leader Florida Gulf Coast Monday night at UNF Arena. The game is at 7 p.m., and is sponsored by Dunn Wellness.
“Tomorrow is another challenge in which we face the top team in the A-Sun,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Florida Gulf Coast is an extremely talented team that has an explosive offense. They don't make many mistakes and can very quickly capitalize on any mistakes that their opponent makes. Florida Gulf Coast defended their nest in January. We have to execute our offensive and defensive game plans in order to defend our nest.”
Monday night's game will include the Atlantic Sun's top two overall scoring defense teams and the top two shooters in conference-only games. Florida Gulf Coast has limited opponents to just 53.8 ppg, while UNF's defense has kept its opposition to 59.0 ppg. After a 69.2 percent performance from the floor on Saturday, UNF's Raneisha Lamar is shooting a conference-best 54.9 percent (39-for-71) against A-Sun opponents. FGCU's Brittany Kennedy is right behind at 54.7 percent (41-for-75).
Several consecutive defensive stops and a big 13-0 run propelled the Ospreys to a 56-52 win over Stetson, who is the second-ranked team in the conference. Lamar picked up her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Lamar is just one double-double shy of tying the single-season most double-doubles in UNF's Division I history. Larkira Jones tallied six double-doubles during the 2010-11 campaign.
Since coming back from Christmas break, Florida Gulf Coast has gone 11-0 with 10-straight Atlantic Sun wins. The Eagles have scored over 60 points in 10 of those last 11 games, with their only non-60 point game being against UNF on Jan. 7. During its winning streak, FGCU has averaged 73.5 ppg while holding opponents to just 50.0 ppg. As a team, the Eagles lead the Atlantic Sun in 10 overall stats categories. They have the conference's top field goal shooter in Kennedy (53.3 percent, 81-for-152), top stealer (Kennedy, 3.0 spg), and free throw shooter (Sarah Hansen, 85.3 percent, 99-for-116). Meanwhile, Jamie Gluesing, who had 20 points during the Eagles' 80-49 win over Jacksonville, is second in the Atlantic Sun in 3-pt. field goal percentage, shooting 44.7 percent (34-for-76). Hansen is also third conference in points with 16.9 per game.
FGCU holds a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series and won this season's first meeting 53-42 in Fort Myers on Jan. 7. Both of UNF's wins in the series have occurred at UNF Arena with the last one being a 57-56 victory on Feb. 13, 2010. However, since then, FGCU has won the last five.
