Ospreys to Host Pair of Teams Over the Weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida returns to action over the weekend with four games at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys host Jacksonville State and Charleston Southern in a mini-tournament. North Florida opens the weekend with a game against JSU on Friday, Mar. 1 at 3:00 p.m., and follows with a game against CSU at 6:30 p.m. The weekend continues on Sunday as the Ospreys play the Gamecocks (1:00 p.m.) and Buccaneers (3:30 p.m.) once again. Jacksonville State and Charleston Southern square off against each other on Saturday afternoon.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 6-2 overall record. The Ospreys come into the weekend after a 7-6 extra-inning victory over No. 29 Florida on Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
Jacksonville State is 3-7 overall. The Gamecocks enter the weekend after dropping a pair of midweek games to in-state rival South Alabama (L, 3-1; L, 8-3).
Charleston Southern defeated The Citadel on Wednesday, Feb. 27 and enters the weekend with a 5-3 mark.
North Florida is 2-1 all-time against Jacksonville State. The Ospreys won the series with the Gamecocks in Jacksonville, Ala. last season. UNF won the first two games (W, 7-2; W, 9-3) before being edged in the finale (L, 3-2).
The Ospreys are 3-1 all-time against the Buccaneers, including a 1-0 mark in Jacksonville. North Florida earned a 6-1 victory in the first ever meeting between the two teams back on March 3, 1995. Head coach Smoke Laval opened his UNF career on the road against Charleston Southern back in 2011. The Ospreys claimed the weekend series two games to one (W, 12-8; L, 2-1; W, 7-0).
Scouting the Opposition:
Jacksonville State: JSU is 3-7 overall. The Gamecocks opened the season by getting swept by Atlantic Sun opponent Kennesaw State. Jacksonville State then won a pair of games against UAB, but dropped two out of three against Southern Illinois. Heading into the weekend JSU lost a pair of midweek games to South Alabama.
Charleston Southern: CSU enters the weekend 5-3. The Buccaneers opened the season with a series victory over Eastern Kentucky before splitting a pair of midweek games against College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington. The Bucs split a doubleheader with Marist before claiming a victory against The Citadel.
