JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The start of a busy week at home commences for University of North Florida softball on Wednesday when the Ospreys host Mount St. Mary's in a mid-week doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex.
Wednesday's doubleheader is the first two contests of an eight-game homestand. The Ospreys are 1-0 at home this season and 2-0 in mid-week games. Additionally, the Ospreys have won their last four games with shutouts in their last three.
It is just the second time in UNF's Division I years in which the Ospreys strung together three-or-more consecutive shutouts. UNF held opponents scoreless for four-straight games from Mar. 2-Mar. 11 in the 2011 season.
Pitching and defense were key to the Ospreys' last three shutouts. Since Providence score its only run in the bottom of the third on Feb. 22, junior Cortney Radke and sophomores Kayla Goff and Kaylie Wallace have combined to pitch 24.2 scoreless innings.
Mount St. Mary's is in the midst of a week-long trip to the Sunshine State. The Mount are 0-3 after opening the 2013 campaign at last weekend's rain-shortened JU Invitational. Rain also caused The Mount's scheduled games against St. Bonaventure and Jacksonville on Tuesday to be cancelled. Mount St. Mary's finishes it trip at the Florida Home Tournament in Gainesville this weekend. Holly Buckel was 4-for-7 in two games at the JU Invitational.
UNF leads the all-time series 4-0 and won last year's game 7-0 in eight innings on Mar. 4, 2012 at the first Osprey Invitational.
First pitch on Wednesday is set for 4 p.m. Admission to all UNF softball games is free.
