PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Even Mother Nature couldn't dampen the spirits of the North Florida men's golf team Tuesday as the Ospreys swept the team and individual championships of the 2013 John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club.
UNF won the team title with a record score of 559 while senior Kevin Phelan claimed the medalist crown with his own record score of 131. Fellow UNF senior Sean Dale finished as the individual runner-up at 135.
The annual UNF-hosted event in its 22nd year was shortened to 36 holes after heavy rains on Monday evening and Tuesday morning made the course too wet to continue play. It was the first time in the tournament's history that all 54 holes were not completed.
North Florida claimed the championship with a two-day total of 559, which matched the tournament record for 36 holes of play (South Carolina, 1998). The Ospreys opening round 276 on Sunday was the best first round score in tournament history and matched the low team round in event history, too. (Augusta State, 2001). It marked the third Hayt Invitational title for UNF after the team won their home event in 2010 and 1994.
Phelan opened play Sunday carding a tournament record low 64 (-8) and followed it up with a 67 (-5) on Monday. His two-day score (131) bested the event's previous 36-hole mark by five shots. Dale's two-round tally was also one shot better than the previous record. The win marked the first medalist honor for Phelan, who had previously posted three runner-up finishes in his career.
"Winning a tournament is always great," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "It is even better when you can win your home event but this week was really special because the guys wanted to win this for Mr. Hayt. Not only is he one of our biggest financial supporters, but he is without a doubt our biggest fan. He means so much to our program so this win was extra nice. I am really proud of how the team played and thrilled for Kevin to earn his first tournament victory. This was a great way to keep our spring season rolling."
North Florida now enjoys a few weeks off before returning to competition on Mar. 15-17 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
