JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team notched five straight-set victories in singles play en route to a 6-1 victory over South Alabama on Sunday afternoon at UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys' victory was their fourth in their last six matches and their second of the three-match weekend.
"This was a good end to a physical weekend for us," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "I'm proud of how well the girls bounced back after yesterday's tough loss."
UNF took the doubles point to open the day, getting victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Seniors Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre cruised to an 8-1 victory over Emily Newton and Mchaela Meszarosova at No. 1, while sophomore Marina Cunningham and freshman Mariella Calderon downed Cinta Papke and Mary Angela Martin at No. 3, 8-3.
In singles play, Aviles quickly doubled the Ospreys' lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Meszarosova. Junior Simona Weymar then made it 3-0 in favor of UNF, downing Newton at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2. Both Aviles and Weymar raised their record in dual matches this season to 6-2.
Sophomore Taylor Hollander then clinched the victory for the Ospreys with her fifth consecutive win of the season, triumphing over Martin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to put UNF ahead, 4-0. Aguirre also added a fourth match to her winning streak, this time in her first match at No. 3 this season, a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mariya Krachok.
"Taylor and Melanie had great weekends," Cohen emphasized. "I was happy to see them grow into their positions on this team."
Cunningham had the Ospreys' final singles win on the day, taking down Papke in a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 4.
The Ospreys have eight days until their next match, when they will welcome College of Charleston to UNF Tennis Complex on March 5 for a 2 p.m. match.
