Ospreys Conclude CCSA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team concluded the 2013 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships at the Gabrielson Natatorium in Athens, Ga. on the campus of the University of Georgia. The Ospreys posted solid times throughout the entire meet, finishing in sixth place.
The Ospreys team of Rebeca Bernard, Caitlyn Gutierrez, Maria Bernard and Natalie McCallum combined for a time of 3:28.52 in the 400 freestyle relay to break a North Florida school record in the event.
The meet was the final collegiate meet for seniors Katie England, Sara Evans and Julia Moomaw, who competed in their final CCSA Championships.
Florida Gulf Coast women won the 2013 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships. The Eagles picked up a total of 712 points, earning its fifth consecutive CCSA Championship title. Liberty followed with 609 points, while Georgia Southern took third with a score of 482.5. College of Charleston placed fourth with 353.5 points and in fifth with 349 points was Gardner-Webb. North Florida took sixth-place with 330.5 points, while Davidson followed in seventh with 262 points and Campbell in eighth with 236.5 points. UNC Asheville placed ninth with 135 points and Radford was 10th with 117 points. Rounding out the field was Howard with 84 points, VMI with 47 points and North Carolina A&T with 44 points.
The final day of competition began with the 1,650-yard freestyle. Amy Taylor was the Ospreys' top finisher, posting a time of 17:35.79. Olivia Langford followed with a time of 17:36.73.
In the 200 backstroke, Kristina Alexiou advanced to the finals with a time of 2:06.52. In the finals, the sophomore posted a time of 2:07.36 to earn points for the Ospreys. In the preliminaries, Krissy Morgan notched a time of 2:08.29, while Ellice Mae Sanchez posted a time of 2:09.09.
The 100 freestyle saw sisters R. Bernard and M. Bernard posting the top finishes for North Florida. R. Bernard recorded a time of 52.63, while M. Bernard touched at 52.83. Gutierrez (53.68), Janie Kennedy (54.06) and Sanchez (55.09) also competed in the 100 free for the Ospreys.
Evans advanced to the top half of the finals in the 200 breaststroke with a preliminary time of 2:19.84, while McCallum (2:20.48) and England (2:22.15) also advanced to the finals in the 200 breaststroke. In the finals, Evans posted a time of 2:20.27. McCallum won the second heat of the finals with a time of 2:18.63 just ahead of England who timed in at 2:22.65 in the finals. Bridget Woods (2:23.70) and Hannah Brown (2:41.85) also competed in the preliminaries.
Lissa Janowicz posted a time of 2:07.09 in the prelims of the 200 butterfly. In the finals, the sophomore bested her time, clocking a 2:06.40 in the finals. Taylor also competed in the event, posting a time of 2:09.52 to finish just out of qualifying for the finals.
In the 3-meter diving, all five North Florida divers advanced past the preliminaries into the final 16 with freshman Fernanda Robles qualifying for the top 8 in the event. Robles posted a score of 267.95 to qualify for the top half of the finals. In the finals, the freshman posted a score of 254.15. Amanda Habig (254.85), Moomaw (252.25), Morgan Whittle (252.00) and Monica Rice (248.45) finished in order for the Ospreys.
In the final event of the CCSA Championships, the North Florida 400 freestyle relay team broke a school record. R. Bernard, Gutierrez, M. Bernard and McCallum bested the previous UNF record of 3:29.49 (set in 2010) by nearly a full second, posting a time of 3:28.52. The team finished just off the podium in fourth place.
