JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball returns to its home court at UNF Arena on Saturday when the Ospreys host USC Upstate on Senior Day at 2 p.m. The game is sponsored by Pepsi.
“We have two home games left this season,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Even though we locked up a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, we still have to finish strong. A loss or two in these last few games can determine if you are among the top four seeds or the bottom four. USC Upstate is a very talented team and we saw what they are capable of in Spartanburg last month. They have several players that can make big offensive plays. We have to stick to our game plan and be ready on both ends of the court so that we can protect our home floor.”
Prior to Saturday's game, UNF will recognize seniors Jasmine Hicks, Fabiola Josil and Jadhken Kerr for their accomplishment towards the women's basketball program.
“Fab, Jas and Jake are three tremendous student-athletes,” said Tappmeyer. “They have truly dedicated themselves to representing the university and the women's basketball program on and off the court. I know all three will be successful in their future endeavors.”
UNF attempts to end a four-game losing skid on Saturday. The Ospreys' last win was three weeks ago in the 56-52 upset of Stetson that took place at UNF Arena. However, despite the losing streak, UNF still clinched a spot in the 2013 General Shale Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Championships. Lipscomb's loss to Stetson last Monday night allowed UNF to get its fourth-straight postseason bid.
Raneisha Lamar picked up her seventh double-double of the season during UNF's most recent game. Lamar notched 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds at Jacksonville last Saturday. Lamar's 18 points also tied for fifth among UNF's single-game leaders, while her seven double-doubles are the most in a single season in UNF's Division I era.
Saturday's game will pit the A-Sun's top two shooters against each other. Lamar is second in the conference, shooting 50.0 percent (76-for-152). USC Upstate's Brittany Starling is an A-Sun leading 54.0 percent (102-for-189) from the floor.
USC Upstate finishes out the regular season with three road games and attempts to bounce back from a 55-54 setback to Mercer in its home finale last Monday. Despite, the loss to Mercer, the Spartans also earned a spot in the A-Sun Tournament due to Lipscomb's loss. USC Upstate enters Saturday with the A-Sun's second-high field goal (.423) and three-point field goal (.326) percentages. Meanwhile, Tee'Ara Copney is seventh in the conference with 12.9 ppg.
UNF holds a 12-9 lead in the all-time series, but it has been USC Upstate that has won the last four meetings.
