JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball makes it first home appearance of the 2013 season on Wednesday when the Ospreys welcome Oakland for a single game at the UNF Softball Complex.
“We are looking forward to playing in front of our fans for the first time this season,” said head coach Marcie Hickey. “We have gotten off to a good start and this past weekend was a good test for us. It showed us what this team is capable of doing. Oakland is a new team to our schedule this year. They are opening the season with a challenging road trip to the South and will have played eight games in seven days.”
For the first time in UNF's 22-year history, the Ospreys' home opener will consist of just a single game. All previous 21 home-openers were doubleheaders.
UNF comes off back-to-back winning weekends at two early season tournaments and is already 1-0 in mid-week games. Last Wednesday, the Ospreys posted a 2-0 win at UCF. Meanwhile, UNF went 3-2 at the Troy Subway Invitational last weekend and advanced to the tournament's championship game. Jackie Reese hit a pair of home runs at the Troy Subway Invitational, including the Ospreys' first homer of the season. Meanwhile, Marissa Thomas, who had the game-winning run in UNF's 3-2 victory over Troy and a game-winning three-run double in the 7-6 rally over Troy, had a lead-off home run in the championship game against Virginia Tech.
Oakland's season-opening eight-game road trip began for the Grizzlies at last weekend's Georgia State Tournament. The Grizzlies went 2-1 on opening weekend that included a 6-4 win over Atlantic Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky. Oakland finished the Georgia portion of its trip with a split at Columbus State. Following Wednesday's game, Oakland concludes it venture with a doubleheader at Florida A&M. However, that will be the Grizzlies' last set of games for almost four weeks as Oakland's next game is not until Mar. 19 at Central Michigan.
Erika Polidori is hitting a team-best .389 (7-for-18), while Erin Galloway is .353 (6-for-17) with three doubles. Meanwhile, pitcher Erin Kownacki was just one out shy of having a no-hitter in Game Two at Columbus State.
The first 100 Osprey Nation members to attend the game will receive a free Swag Bag consisting of a koozie, cup, croakies and sunglasses. Osprey Nation member must either wear their Osprey Nation T-Shirt or present their Osprey Nation membership card in order to receive a Swag Bag.
First pitch for Wednesday's home-opener is set for 4 p.m., and admission for all softball games is free.
