Softball Unable to Overcome Virginia Tech's Rally In Troy Subway Invitational Championship

TROY, Ala. – University of North Florida softball's bid for an early season tournament title came up just short on Sunday against Virginia Tech in the Troy Subway Invitational Championship Game. The Ospreys fell 5-3 to the Hokies.
With both teams scoreless through the first two innings, UNF got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Mariah Reynolds sent a two-out double to left field that drove in Lexi Taylor from second for the game's first run.
UNF added to its lead in the fourth when Stephanie McAdam scored on a Marissa Thomas hit up the middle that made it 2-0.
However, Virginia Tech got runs in each of the last three innings to erase UNF's lead. In the bottom of the fourth and with runners in scoring position, C. Liddle's sacrifice fly was enough to drive in L Gaskill to make it 2-1. The Hokies attempted to tie it on the same play, but the Ospreys' defense got K Banks out at home.
The Hokies did score the tying run in the fifth, though. After a lead-off triple, K. Mericka reached home on a D. Anderson RBI-single to make it 2-2.
Virginia Tech broke the tie on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. The Hokies also added two more runs in the sixth with Liddle and M McCoy scoring on a J McNamara single to give Virginia Tech a 5-2 advantage.
UNF brought the Hokies' lead down to two in the seventh when Marissa Thomas sent a lead-off shot over left field. But that was the closest UNF could get as Virginia Tech retired the side.
J. Harrell received the win after pitching the final 3.1 innings for the Hokies. Harrell struck out five and only allowed one run off one hit.
Kayla Goff picked up the loss after allowed three runs off one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
Thomas led UNF at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Mericka was 2-for-2 with one run and Gaskill went 2-for-3 with two runs.
UNF returns to action on Wednesday with its home-opener against Oakland at the UNF Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
