JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball renews its cross-town rivalry with Jacksonville on Saturday in this season's second SunTrust River City Rumble meeting.
“This is a game that both teams look forward to,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “We want to win. JU wants to win. It's for city bragging rights and a point in the barrel standings. Our last two games with JU have been extremely close and we know they want to take this game on their home court. We have to step it up and execute on both ends of the court for the full 40 minutes.”
The game has several implications for the Ospreys. In addition to a barrel point up for grabs, UNF has the chance to lock up a spot in the 2013 General Shale Atlantic Sun Championships. An Osprey win and a Lipscomb loss on Saturday will allow UNF to clinch a postseason berth for the fourth-straight season.
UNF will try to break a three-game losing skid on Saturday. The Ospreys have not won since their 56-52 upset of Stetson two weeks ago.
Jadhken Kerr is just two three-pointers shy of breaking into the Top-Three on the Atlantic Sun's all-time three-point field goals made list. Kerr enters Saturday's game with 254 career treys and is fourth all-time. Jenny Conkle made 256 threes during her career at Belmont.
Jacksonville also looks to end a losing streak after dropping its last seven. The Dolphins' have yet to win since a 64-52 win over Kennesaw State on Jan. 14 at Swisher Gymnasium and had this seven-game skid begin with their loss at UNF on Jan. 19. Three players average over 10.0 ppg for the Dolphins. Tracie Sneed leads the team with 11.2 ppg, while Jade Cargill and Queen Alford average 10.8 and 10.1 points, respectively. Cargill is also Jacksonville's top rebounder with 8.0 rpg, which is third in the A-Sun's season leaders.
Jacksonville holds a 9-8 advantage in the all-time series, but UNF has won seven of the last eight games. Additionally, the Ospreys have swept each of the last three regular-season series and took this season's earlier meeting 66-63.
In the 2012-13 barrel standings, UNF enters the weekend with a 5.5-2.5 lead with two points in the standings at stake. In addition to Saturday's women's game, the men's teams play on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Arena.
Tip-off for the women's game is set for 1 p.m., at Swisher Gymnasium on Jacksonville's campus.
