KENNESAW, Ga. – Cold shooting in the second half doomed University of North Florida women's basketball in its 50-40 loss to Kennesaw State Monday night at the KSU Convocation Center.
“We weren't able to hit our shots,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “We missed several wide-open layups and Kennesaw State hit two big threes that changed the momentum.”
Fabiola Josil led UNF with 15 points. Meanwhile, Jadhken Kerr, Raneisha Lamar and Shayla Wilson each pulled down seven rebounds.
Kristina Wells and Chelsea Mason tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively. Sametria Gideon grabbed 11 rebounds.
UNF was 29.6 percent (16-for-54) from the floor, including 22.6 percent (7-for-31) in the second half.
Kennesaw State had a powerful second half en route to shooting 42.9 percent (18-for-42). The Owls were 52.6 percent (10-for-19) in the last 20 minutes, including 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from long range.
In a low-scoring first half, after a 5-5 tie, UNF rattled off a 10-0 run that allowed the Ospreys to go up 15-5 at the 8:28 mark. Kennesaw State chipped away at the Ospreys' lead and pulled to within three on a Chantel Kennedy layup at 1:25 that made it 21-18. Josil converted on a free throw at 36 seconds and UNF took a 22-18 advantage at halftime.
Kennesaw State continue to cut into UNF's lead in the second half and eventually tied the game at 28-28 on a Mason three at 12:35. Both teams battled over the next six minutes. UNF was able to take a one-point, 34-33 lead at 7:02 went Destinee Smith hit a jumper, but a made free throw by Wells just 20 seconds later forced a 34-34 tie.
A Mason layup broke the tie, but Kerr hit both free throws of a one-and-one to make it 36-36 with 3:33 to go. However, that was the closest UNF could get as the Owls finished the game on a 14-4 spurt that included seven made free throws.
UNF returns to action on Saturday when the Ospreys visit cross-town rival Jacksonville in this second's second SunTrust River City Rumble. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m., from Swisher Gymnasium.
