Â
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Season-opening weekend concludes for the University of North Florida women's basketball team on Sunday with a 2 p.m., game against Florida at the O'Connell Center.
Â
"This will be another opportunity for us to test ourselves against strong competition," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We have to do a much better job in defensive transition. We got some really good looks against Miami's zone, but the game is dependent on knocking down open shots. We didn't do that. We have to bounce back tomorrow and be prepared and confident shooters."
Â
UNF will attempt to bounce back after opening the year with a 79-39 loss at Miami on Friday night. Destinee Smith came off the bench to score a team-high 10 points, while transfer Paulina Zaveckaite grabbed seven rebounds in her Osprey debut.
Â
It is the second year in a row in which the Ospreys have made the trip to Gainesville. Additionally, it is the third-straight year UNF's had an SEC opponent on the schedule. However, playing the SEC has not gone to UNF's favor as the Ospreys are 0-5 against current SEC institutions.
Â
Florida began the season with a 93-65 win over Bethune-Cookman on Friday in what was part of a season-opening doubleheader for the Gator basketball programs. Prior to the Florida women's game, UNF's men's basketball came up just short against Florida. Meanwhile, in the women's game, Florida had seven of its eight players score 10+ points against Bethune-Cookman with Ronni Williams leading the way with a 15-point, 17-rebound double-double.
Â
Florida holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series and won last year's game 74-44 on Nov. 19, 2012.
