JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UNF Arena will be packed on Thursday morning when University of North Florida women's basketball faces Edward Waters for Elementary School Day. The game is also UNF's first home game of the 2013-14 season. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
Â
"We are really excited for our home-opener and Elementary School Day tomorrow," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "It is a great atmosphere; the energy inside the gym for that game is unlike any other we play. We label it as the World's Greatest Field Trip and the elementary schools have loved it! Each student gets a math workbook that applies to their grade level, combining math and basketball into one lesson. It is always one of my favorite games of the year."
Â
Over 1,700 students from Duval County are expected to attend Thursday's game. It is the third year in which the Ospreys have hosted an Elementary School Day and the second time the event has fallen on the Ospreys' home-opening game. UNF is 17-4 in its first game of the season at UNF Arena and is an all-time 190-107 at UNF Arena. However, UNF's home schedule has not always started at UNF Arena. During the Ospreys' inaugural year in 1992-93, UNF's first home game at UNF Arena was not until Jan. 16, 1993 against Barry.
Â
UNF comes off a 0-2 season-opening weekend, falling to both Miami and Florida. Most recently at Florida on Sunday, the Ospreys came to within three points of the Gators twice in the second half, including at 13:39 when a pair of Paulina Zaveckaite free throws made it 57-54. Although UNF fell 88-77 to Florida, the Ospreys' 77 points were the most scored against a high-major team in program history. Destinee Smith led the team with 14.0 points per game during the weekend, including a team-high 18 points at Florida.
Â
Edward Waters enters Thursday with a 2-1 record for the year and comes off a 69-57 win at Johnson & Wales (Fla.) on Monday night. Jacqui Harries averages a team-best 18.0 points per game and has recorded two 20-point contests thus far in the 2013-14 season.
Â
The series between UNF and Edward Waters dates back to the Ospreys' first-ever game as a collegiate program. UNF posted a 70-57 victory on Nov. 30, 1992 with current assistant coach Nancy Miller recording eight points and eight rebounds against the Tigers. UNF holds a 9-0 record in the all-time series with the last meeting being a 56-41 UNF win on Nov. 20, 2004.
