JACKSONVILLE – The North Florida basketball team closes its current home stand Friday against cross town rival Jacksonville in the latest installment of the SunTrust River City Rumble. The game features a pair of promotional events for fans and tips at 7 p.m.
Friday's game has been designated as “WHITE OUT” night with all North Florida fans encouraged to support the team by wearing white. As part of the promotion, the first 1,500 UNF students will receive a free t-shirt upon entering the arena.
In addition, the UNF softball team in conjunction with the men's basketball program will be collecting change prior to the game as part of Change 4 Change. Softball team members will be outside the entrances of UNF Arena collecting monies to donate to the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ) in the memory of Nick Patrick, a young man that had been adopted as part of the program by the men's basketball program.
FOJ's Adopt-A-Child Program pairs a child battling a brain tumor with a college sports team who takes the child into their athletic program as member of the team. The child attends practices, games and other activities with his or her newly found brothers and sisters. The team provides love, support and friendship for the child and greatly improves the quality of life for the child. The team, in turn, receives a unique perspective on life and is impacted by a child and his or her family who model courage, strength and faith. It is a win-win relationship for the child and team.
“Adopting Nick and his family was truly a blessing for our entire basketball program,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “Their family continues to be part of our family and this collection is just another way for us to celebrate his life and support this tremendous organization. I hope that everyone coming to the game will take a moment to check their piggy banks, couch cushions and even their car's ash tray if it still has one and bring your change to the game.”
The Ospreys (8-11, 3-3 ASun) look to continue their winning ways after handing Kennesaw State an 81-72 loss on Saturday. Jacksonville (9-10) comes into the contest on a two-game win streak and tied at the top of the Atlantic Sun standings with a 4-2 conference mark.
Friday's tilt marks the 18th meeting between UNF and JU on the hardwood. The Dolphins own a 13-4 lead in the all-time series but the Ospreys have won the last three meetings including a sweep of last year's match-ups.
Parker Smith leads UNF offensively averaging 16.6 points per game while Travis Wallace is second at 15.2 and tops in rebounding with 5.1 boards a game. Smith and Wallace combine to form the conference's top scoring tandem. Additionally, Smith is currently ranked 2nd in the NCAA for three-pointers made per game connecting on 4.0 treys a contest.
JU is led by Keith McDougald's 11.4 points a game. Glenn Powell is one of the ASun's top rebounders pulling down 7.5 rebounds a game.
