JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball head coach Mary Tappmeyer has announced the hiring of Erica White as an assistant coach.
“We are so excited to add Erica to our staff,” said Tappmeyer. “She comes from a stellar basketball background, first as a player with Jean Ribault High School here in Jacksonville and then as a four-year player and a graduate assistant for LSU. Erica is extremely knowledgeable about the game and is passionate about working with student-athletes and winning. She is a tireless worker and will not be denied. She is excited to be coming back home and we think she will be a great addition to the staff.”
“I am extremely excited to be joining the UNF family,” said White. “I am grateful that Coach Tappmeyer and [Athletics Director] Coach Moon have given me the opportunity to continue my coaching career at UNF. As a Jacksonville native, I'm also looking forward to serving the community and moving closer to my family. But most importantly, I'm looking forward to helping our student-athletes be the best young women they can be both on and off the court. Now is a great time to be part of UNF athletics and I'm happy to be part of it.”
During the 2011-12 season, White served as a graduate assisted on Nikki Caldwell's staff at LSU. The Lady Tigers finished the season with a 23-10 record and reached the Second Round in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. As part of LSU's coaching staff, White was responsible for preparing and implementing daily practice plans, assisted in the coordination of filming operations for practices and games, preparing post-game statistic packages and assisting with the team's recruiting. Additionally, White helped with the coordination the first-ever Lady Tiger Elite Bowling Classic, a fundraiser event that resulted in approximately $8,000 donated to the LSU women's basketball program.
White was known as one of the top point guards to play for LSU, helping the Lady Tigers to the Final Four in all four of her seasons from 2004-08. She finished her career as one of the top assist makers in LSU history with 519, which is third all-time. White dished out 10 or more assists five times in her career, including a career-best 14 assists as a sophomore against Vanderbilt on Jan. 26, 2006. During her sophomore campaign, White finished ranked 25th in the nation with 5.4 assists per game. She was a finalist for the 2008 Lieberman Point Guard of the Year and named Second-Team All-SEC and First-Team All-Louisiana as a senior. White was tabbed All-SEC Tournament and Third-Team All-Louisiana as a junior. She was a two-time Academic All-SEC selection, earning the honor as in both her freshman and junior seasons. White, who was a member of the 2006 United States U20 Gold Medal team at the FIBA Americas Championships, was the 17th pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft, getting picked up by the Houston Comets.
White also played professional basketball in Israel. In 2010 as a member of Hapoael Tel Aviv, she led the Israeli league in assists with 8.5 per game. She also played for Ramat Hasharon in 2011.
A 2009 graduate of LSU, White earned her bachelor's degree in general studies, while minoring in sociology, sports studies and communications. She is currently pursuing her master's in sports pedagogy.
