ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 10/12 ranked University of North Florida golf team begins play in the NCAA Athens Regional Thursday at the UGA Golf Course.
The Ospreys are playing in an NCAA Regional for the third consecutive year and the eighth time since becoming a Division I program in 1997-98. It also marks the team's fourth regional appearance in head coach Scott Schroeder's seven-year tenure.
“We are excited and looking forward to teeing it up in regionals,” said Schroeder. “This golf course is in great shape and will be a real challenge for the entire field. This competition will definitely identify the best teams and players.”
UNF enters the Athens Regional on a bit of a hot streak having won their last two tournaments and three of the last four events in which they have played. In April, North Florida dominated a Top 20 laden field at the Gary Koch Invitational then led wire-to-wire in claiming the program's second Atlantic Sun Conference title.
Representing the Ospreys this weekend will be senior Kevin Aylwin, juniors Kevin Phelan and Sean Dale along with freshmen Joey Petronio and MJ Maguire.
All five of UNF's golfers garnered postseason recognition from the Atlantic Sun. Dale, Aylwin and Phelan were all named first-team all-conference with Petronio earning second-team accolades. Petronio and Maguire were both picked on the all-freshman squad. Dale was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Year, Petronio was the A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Schroeder collected his third A-Sun Coach of the Year honor.
The Ospreys, seeded No. 2 at the site, begin play in the three-day, 54-hole event at 8 a.m. from tee No. 1 on Thursday. UNF will be paired with regional top-seed Alabama and third-seed New Mexico.
