ATHENS, Ga. – After playing their final nine holes in a combined 10-under par, the No. 10/12-ranked North Florida golf team is in second place after opening round action in the NCAA Athens Regional at the UGA Golf Course.
UNF, the No. 2 seed at the Athens Regional, fired a 271 (-13) in the first round and trails top-seeded Alabama by just two shots. It was the team's best opening round of the season and matched the low round of the year for the Ospreys.
Senior Kevin Aylwin led the surge for the Ospreys finishing the day with a career low six-under-par 65 including a four hole stretch of eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie early on the back nine. Aylwin leads the medalist competition following a round that had only one score over par and matched the second lowest round in program history.
“I holed out on 11 from 87 yards, and that pretty much got me started,” said Aylwin. “There's a little bit of luck involved, but it definitely was a jump start for me. I thought I was doing pretty well, then I started to hear that everybody else was doing well, so that felt great.”
In addition to Aylwin's strong start, freshman MJ Maguire carded a career-best 66 (-5) and finished the day in a three-way tie for second in medalist play. The UNF rookie posted back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to end his round.
Junior Sean Dale, the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Year, is tied for 14th following his two-under 69 while fellow junior Kevin Phelan posted an even par 71 (T-26). A-Sun Freshman of the Year Joey Petronio rallied from a sluggish start and shot four-under on the back nine to finish with a one-over 72 (T-37).
“Kevin (Aylwin) and MJ (Maguire) both played great today and we got solid rounds from the other three guys,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We did a good job of just taking what the course gave us today. We need to stay focused, get some rest and do the same thing the next two days.”
Alabama leads the team competition at 269 followed by UNF, East Carolina (276), Georgia (280), Houston (282) and UNC Wilmington (282) rounding out the top five squads. Augusta State is in seventh at 283 followed by Wake Forest (284), New Mexico (285), UT-Arlington (285), Iowa (288), Long Beach State (297) and Loyola-Maryland (301).
North Florida will be paired with Bama and ECU off of the first tee on Friday beginning at 9:10 a.m.
The top five finishers at the Athens Regional advance to the NCAA Championship round May 29-June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
