MACON, Ga. – The University of North Florida baseball team closes out a nine-game road stretch with three games against Mercer at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga. The Ospreys and Bears open the Atlantic Sun Conference series on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. The two teams will meet on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m., before closing out the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
The weekend series is important to both teams as both teams battle for a spot in the A-Sun Tournament in DeLand, Fla. at the end of the month. North Florida enters the weekend with a 28-21 overall record, but a 9-12 conference mark. Mercer is 31-18 overall and a game ahead of the Ospreys in the league standings at 10-11.
North Florida holds a 9-6 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. The Ospreys are 5-4 against the Bears in Jacksonville with a 4-2 mark against MU in Macon.
Last season, UNF won the series 2-1 in Jacksonville. The Ospreys opened up the series with a 7-5 victory, before dropping an 11-6 decision. In the rubber match between the two teams, Tyler Moore tossed a complete game shutout en route to A-Sun Pitcher of the Week accolades with a 5-0 series clinching victory.
The two teams met for the first time in program history with a three-game series in 2006 in Macon. The Ospreys swept a doubleheader to claim the series, but dropped the final game of the series. The only other time the two teams met in Macon was in 2008. The Bears won the opening contest, but the Ospreys rallied for a pair of victories to earn the series.
The last time the two teams played against each other in Macon, graduate assistant coach Andrew Hannon was a student-athlete who played in the games. Hannon finished the three-game series 4-for-11 (.364) with a double, three runs scored, three RBI and a pair of walks to help UNF win the series. Senior Andrew Karmeris was a member of the team, but did not compete as he was redshirting during the 2008 season.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Bears' Nick Backlund hit three of the Mercer baseball teams' five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Alabama State on Tuesday evening at Claude Smith Field. Mercer won game one 8-5, and followed it up with a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.
In total, the Orange and Black used all 13 pitchers on their roster to secure the doubleheader sweep. Freshman Ben Lumsden took home his first collegiate win with two scoreless innings of relief in game one, while sophomore Brandon Barker started game two and earned the win after pitching a scoreless first inning.
