
Softball's Season Ends With Pair of Losses at Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A pair of one-run losses concluded the 2012 season for the University of North Florida softball team. The Ospreys were tripped up by Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 in the first game and then 2-1 in nine innings in Game Two on Thursday at the FGCU Softball Complex.
In Game One, UNF took advantage of a costly throwing error by Florida Gulf Coast to score two runs in the top of the first. Kaley Brosky and Danica Mandarano each got home on the miscue, giving the Ospreys a 2-0 lead.
However, the Eagles hit home runs in both the second and third innings to take the game. Chelsea Zgrabik made it a one-run game with a lead-off homer in the second inning. Mariah Fernandez added a two-run blast in the third that put Florida Gulf Coast ahead 3-2.
Shelby Morgan pitched all 7.0 innings to get the win. Morgan allowed two unearned runs off four hits and struck out five.
Kayla Goff was credited with the loss, allowing three runs off three hits in 2.2 innings. Goff also struck out one.
In Game Two, Florida Gulf Coast got out to the early 1-0 lead after the first inning when a wild pitch brought home Jessica Barnes.
UNF answered in the top of the second with Chie Someya sending an RBI-single to right field, driving home Mandarano.
The Ospreys and Florida Gulf Coast remained tied at 1-1 for the next 6.5 innings. However, the Eagles broke the tie in the bottom of the ninth when Kayla Gabel hit a walk-off homer to left field.
Morgan pitched the final 1.1 innings in order to get the win. Morgan kept UNF scoreless and hitless, getting all four batters she faced to groundout.
Kaylie Wallace, who entered the game in the second inning, pitched 7.0 innings in the loss. Wallace allowed one run off four hits, while striking out five.
