JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida golf coach Scott Schroeder announced the signing of Osten Waite to a national-letter-of-intent to begin playing for the Ospreys in 2012-13.
“Osten is a talented young man that we believe is just going to continue to get better,” Schroeder said. “He brings a really strong work ethic and has the desire and dedication to improve in all facets of his game. We are looking forward to Osten joining the UNF Golf Family.”
Waite, a lefty from Ocala, Fla., was a standout linkster for Trinity Catholic High School. He was named the Star-Banner Golfer of the Year as a senior. He led the Celtics in nine-hole scoring average (38.4) and had team-best finishes at the FHSAA regionals (second) and state championship (19th).
“UNF just felt right,” said Waite. “The closeness to home came into consideration but it wasn't the No. 1 factor. The amenities at UNF along with the practice areas and schedule will provide me the best opportunity to continue my growth and evolution as a golfer.”
A late-bloomer, Waite didn't start playing golf until eighth grade but had a little bit of an advantage as his father, Grant Waite, enjoyed success as a player on the PGA tour and currently coaches several tour players.
Waite becomes the third member of UNF's 2012 signing class joining early signees Austin Padova (Hudson, Fla.) and Joe Stepnes (Pensacola, Fla.). The Ospreys, ranked No. 7 in latest GolfStat rankings, recently captured the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference championship and will find out May 7 in which NCAA Regional they will participate.
