JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The chance to complete an undefeated season against conference opponents is here for the University of North Florida women's tennis team with the start of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championships. After a perfect 9-0 conference record, the top-seeded Ospreys start the tournament in Saturday's semifinals against fourth-seeded Stetson.
Saturday's match will be the second time in history in which UNF and Stetson have met in the semifinal round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament. UNF, who is playing in its third A-Sun Tournament, defeated the Hatters 4-1 in the 2010 semifinals. The Ospreys went on to win the tournament that year, defeating No. 1 ETSU 4-1 in the championship.
UNF carries a 10-match winning-streak into the tournament. During this span, the Ospreys have not allowed a team to get more than one point. UNF's recorded five shutouts and has won five matches by 6-1 scores.
UNF was dominant on the doubles court throughout the nine-match conference schedule. All three of UNF's doubles teams – Aline Berkenbrock/Lorena Aviles, Simona Weymar/Rebeca Pereira and Danielle Day/Melanie Aguirre – went 9-0 against conference opponents this spring. The Ospreys have also been strong in singles play with Aguirre, Aviles, Berkenbrock, Marina Cunningham and Weymar all entering this weekend with multi-match winning streaks.
Stetson advances to Saturday's semifinals after posting a 4-0 win over Kennesaw State in Friday's opening round. The Hatters won at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to win the doubles point and then picked up wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
In singles, Diana Bukjeva and Lindsey Cable have posted strong showings on the No. 4 and No. 5 courts, respectively, this season. Bukjeva has won her last four in order to have a 14-4 No. 4 singles record. Cable is 16-3 on the No. 5 court. Meanwhile, in doubles, Bukajeva and Jen Miller have combined for a 16-4 overall doubles mark and have won their last five.
Earlier this season, UNF posted a 6-1 win at Stetson on Mar. 31. The Ospreys swept doubles and then took five of the six singles matches.
Match time for Saturday's semifinal is set for 10 a.m., at ETSU. Winner of the UNF-Stetson match advances to Sunday's championship match and will play either ETSU or Florida Gulf Coast.
