JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida sand volleyball team makes its home debut with a full weekend of action at the Jacksonville Beach sand courts. The Ospreys welcome in-state foe FAU for a dual match Friday at 10 a.m. before hosting a seven-team tournament field Saturday and Sunday in the UNF Sand Invitational presented by Chicago Pizza and Metro PCS.
“We are looking forward to the opportunity of playing some home matches,” said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. “The Jacksonville Beach courts provide us the chance to showcase an action-packed new sport for UNF and in college athletics. This will be one of the largest collegiate events this season and features some outstanding teams. We've played in some good enviroments already and are definitely excited to play in front of a home crowd.”
The Ospreys own a 3-2 mark in dual matches this season and look to finish their regular season dual schedule on a winning note against the Owls. FAU faces Jacksonville in its first dual match of the season Thursday before facing UNF.
The UNF Sand Invitational is a two-day event featuring pool play on Saturday followed by bracket play on Sunday. Saturday's competition features seven pools of five teams. The top two finishers in each pool along with the top two third place finishers advance to gold bracket play on Sunday. A 12-team silver bracket and seven-team bronze bracket will also be contested Sunday.
Tournament play begins both days at 9 a.m. at the Jacksonville Beach courts, located just south of the Pier. Admission to the event is free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own beach chairs or towels events.
Following this weekend's action, North Florida closes its inaugural season of sand volleyball Apr. 20-22 at the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament hosted by Jacksonville University.
