Sand Volleyball Earns Split on Final Day of Classic

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. –The North Florida sand volleyball team closed competition at the College of Charleston Sand Classic Sunday posting a 3-2 win over UAB before dropping a 3-2 decision to the host squad.

With the split, the Ospreys moved to 3-2 in dual match play in the team's inaugural season.

In the squad's first match of the day, UNF earned wins at the No. 1, 4 and 5 positions to claim the team victory. Emily Strack and Dagnija Medina posted a straight set 2-0 (21-11/21-19) win in the top position. At No. 4, Nicole Baran and Allison Shirley also posted a 2-0 (21-19/23-21) victory while Marija Pantovic and Kelsey Smith paired together for the decisive 2-1 (21-16/12-21/15-13) win at No. 5.

UAB's wins came at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Julie Trembley and Carolyn Jenkins suffered a tough 2-0 (21-18/21-17) loss while Paige Pridgeon and Britt Claessens fell in a tightly contested three-game set (13-21/21-19/9-15).

In the Ospreys second match of the day, the College of Charleston captured wins at the top three positions to secure the decision. Two of the three pairings went three-sets. UNF's victories came from the No. 4 tandem of Shirley and Baran, 2-1 (21-18/17-21/15-10) and the No. 5 pair of Pantovic and Smith, 2-0 (21-15, 21-18).

North Florida's next competition comes Friday at 10 a.m. on the Jacksonville Beach sand courts when UNF hosts FAU in the first home match in program history. The Ospreys will also host the North Florida Sand Invitational at Jacksonville Beach on Saturday and Sunday.
