JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Atlantic Sun Conference play begins the weekend for the University of North Florida women's tennis team this weekend with two matches at the UNF Tennis Complex. The weekend begins with the Ospreys hosting USC Upstate on Friday and then ETSU on Saturday. Both matches are at 2 p.m.
The match with ETSU will be a re-match of the last two Atlantic Sun Tournament Championships. In 2010, the No. 2 seed Ospreys upended top-seed ETSU 4-1. However, last year, No. 1 ETSU swept UNF 4-0.
UNF is coming off a 5-2 loss at Georgia State on Monday. However, the Ospreys carry a three-match home winning streak into the weekend. Both Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre have won their last three singles matches. Additionally, Aviles 3-0 singles performance last week allowed her to receive Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors on Wednesday.
USC Upstate has lost its last two, but the Spartans posted a 4-3 win against Nicholls State in their last road match. Seven of USC Upstate's 12 matches this spring have been on the road. Talia Rojas is the only Spartan on a winning streak, having won her last two singles matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
All three of ETSU's wins this season have been in Tennessee as the Lady Bucs are winless on the road this season. ETSU has dropped its last two matches and play at Jacksonville prior to facing UNF. Jessica Brumit and Marine Wieliczko recorded both of the Lady Bucs points at Wake Forest.
